Sunresin and ChromaGenix Partner to Expand Global Access to AAV Purification Technologies
AAV purification is one of the most demanding challenges in cell and gene therapy manufacturing. Each serotype behaves differently. Each program comes with its own recovery requirements, impurity profile and scale-up considerations. And for many developers, redesigning the downstream process every time they work with a new serotype adds time, cost and complexity they cannot afford.
That is the problem Sunresin and ChromaGenix set out to address together.
The two companies have announced a cooperation agreement to support cell and gene therapy developers with advanced chromatography technologies for AAV purification across Asia, Europe and the Americas.
Under the agreement, Sunresin will supply and support the resins across Asian markets, while ChromaGenix will continue to serve customers in Europe and the Americas.
Why This Collaboration Matters
AAV manufacturing has a well-known bottleneck. Most capture technologies are serotype-specific, which means every new vector candidate can require a completely new downstream strategy. That adds process development time, increases validation complexity and makes it harder to build manufacturing platforms that work across a pipeline.
The collaboration between Sunresin and ChromaGenix is designed to change that.
AvXcel is designed for serotype-agnostic capture of AAV1-9, rh10, select engineered serotypes and novel capsids. Its synthetic ligand design offers practical process advantages, including near-neutral elution conditions that can improve functional recovery, reduce immediate neutralization requirements and shorten time-in-facility compared with more acidic elution workflows.
The collaboration also includes two novel resins developed for the selective removal of host cell proteins and DNA from viral vector and antibody process streams. Together, these technologies address two critical needs in downstream processing: AAV capture and impurity removal.
Bringing Technology Closer to Customers
Access to purification technology is only part of the challenge. Cell and gene therapy developers also need technical discussion, regional support and practical guidance when evaluating new chromatography solutions in their own processes.
Under the agreement, Sunresin will supply and support the resins across Asian markets, while ChromaGenix will continue to serve customers in Europe and the Americas.
This regional structure is intended to help customers access the technologies more easily, discuss process needs locally and receive support during evaluation and implementation.
“Cell and gene therapy developers need purification technologies that are technically robust, scalable and easier to apply across different AAV programs,” said Fred Ghanem, Vice President of the Life Science Division at Sunresin. “Our cooperation with ChromaGenix combines complementary strengths: ChromaGenix’s synthetic ligand-based purification technologies and Sunresin’s expertise in chromatography development, manufacturing, supply reliability and customer support across Asia. It gives customers access to a practical platform for both AAV capture and impurity removal.”

Chris Major, CEO of ChromaGenix, also highlighted the importance of broad serotype coverage and synthetic ligand design for downstream development.
“Broad serotype coverage can simplify downstream development and reduce the need to redesign the capture step for every new AAV candidate,” said Chris Major. “AvXcel’s synthetic ligand design also offers developers unique process options, including near-neutral elution conditions that can improve functional recovery, reduce immediate neutralization requirements and shorten time-in-facility compared with more acidic elution workflows.”

Supporting the Future of AAV Manufacturing
The cell and gene therapy field continues to move toward more diverse viral vector pipelines, more demanding quality expectations and stronger pressure to improve manufacturing efficiency.
For AAV developers, downstream purification remains one of the areas where better tools can have a direct impact on recovery, impurity clearance, process consistency and scalability.
By combining serotype-agnostic affinity capture, selective impurity removal, resin manufacturing capabilities and regional customer support, Sunresin and ChromaGenix aim to help customers build cleaner, more scalable and more consistent AAV manufacturing processes.
This cooperation reflects a shared goal: to make advanced AAV purification technologies more accessible to the teams developing the next generation of cell and gene therapies.
