Resin-Based Gold Recovery Solution for Low-Grade and Remote Ore Projects

As mining companies continue to evaluate lower-grade, more complex, and more remote gold resources, flexible recovery technologies are becoming increasingly important. These resources may still contain recoverable gold value, but for some smaller, scattered, or infrastructure-limited projects, building a large fixed recovery plant may face economic or logistical constraints.

Resin-based gold recovery provides a practical option for these applications. In the mining industry, the phrase “gold absorbing resin” is often used, although the more accurate technical term is “gold adsorption resin.” In this process, functionalized polymer resin beads selectively capture gold complexes from leach solutions through ion exchange or coordination mechanisms.

In a typical cyanide leaching system, gold is dissolved into solution as the gold-cyanide complex Au(CN)₂⁻. This pregnant leach solution, or PLS, may also contain copper, zinc, iron, suspended solids, clay, and other impurities depending on ore type and leaching conditions. Gold-selective resin is designed to capture and concentrate Au(CN)₂⁻ from this complex solution. After loading, the resin is eluted to release gold into a smaller volume of concentrated solution, which can then be processed through electrowinning, smelting, and refining.

How Resin-Based Gold Recovery Works

Gold recovery resin operates through a repeatable adsorption, elution, and regeneration cycle. During adsorption, pregnant leach solution passes through the resin bed and gold-cyanide complexes bind to active sites on the resin. Backwashing helps remove entrained solids and maintain bed performance. During elution, a concentrated eluant releases the loaded gold from the resin into a smaller volume of solution. The resin is then regenerated and prepared for the next cycle.

Different projects may use different resin process configurations. Resin-in-Pulp allows resin beads to contact leached pulp directly. Resin-in-Leach introduces resin during the leaching stage, allowing gold dissolution and adsorption to occur together. Fixed-bed column systems are more suitable for clarified pregnant solution, heap leach, vat leach, and modular recovery units, where solution can be pumped through packed resin columns in a controlled and compact system.

The choice of configuration depends on ore chemistry, slurry characteristics, solution clarity, gold concentration, impurity profile, and site conditions. This is why resin selection and process design should always be based on testing and project-specific evaluation.

When Resin Technology Becomes Valuable

Activated carbon remains a proven and widely used technology in conventional CIP and CIL gold recovery plants. Resin-based recovery should not be viewed as a universal replacement for activated carbon. Instead, it can provide an additional process option for specific project conditions where modularity, faster kinetics, smaller footprint, or flexible deployment are important.

For selected low-grade, oxidized, tailings, remote, or scattered resources, resin-based systems may help reduce infrastructure requirements and improve project flexibility. In certain ore systems, resin processes may also show better adaptability to fine solids or clay-rich conditions, depending on slurry properties and system design. With optimized equipment and operating strategy, modular resin systems may also help improve water and reagent utilization.

Resin type selection is also important. Strong-base anion exchange resins are commonly used for gold-cyanide recovery because of their affinity for Au(CN)₂⁻. Chelating resins or specialty gold-selective resins may be considered when the pregnant solution contains higher levels of interfering metals such as copper, zinc, or iron. The goal is not simply to choose a resin with high capacity, but to match resin chemistry with the real solution composition and operating requirements.

SepGold™ Mobile Modular Gold Recovery System

To support selected low-grade and remote gold recovery projects, Sunresin developed SepGold™, a mobile modular resin-based gold recovery system. The system combines gold-selective resin technology with fixed resin column operation and simulated moving bed process concepts, automating adsorption, washing, desorption, and regeneration across multiple columns.

SepGold™ is designed for projects where flexible deployment is important. Instead of building a large permanent recovery plant from the beginning, operators can use a modular system to bring recovery capacity closer to the resource. The system can be supplied as a pre-assembled module compatible with 40-foot high-cube container transportation, helping reduce site construction work and shorten commissioning time.

The modular design also allows capacity to be expanded as the project develops. Automated process control and remote monitoring help reduce operating complexity, while column-based resin operation provides a compact route for treating pregnant leach solution from suitable low-grade or remote resources.

In one field application, a resin-based gold recovery system processed pregnant leach solution containing 1.08 g/m³ gold at a flow rate of 80.4 m³/h. The system demonstrated approximately 90% sorption recovery, corresponding to an estimated annual gold output of around 680 kg under the stated operating conditions. This example shows how resin-based recovery can create value when the ore chemistry, resin selection, and modular process design are properly matched.

Sunresin Support from Testing to Implementation

Gold recovery performance depends on more than resin material alone. Ore type, leach chemistry, gold concentration, pH, base metal content, suspended solids, flow rate, contact time, elution method, water availability, and site infrastructure all influence the final process design.

Sunresin supports customers with ore and solution evaluation, resin screening, bench-scale testing, pilot validation, process design, modular equipment configuration, automation, commissioning, and technical service. This integrated approach helps operators evaluate whether resin-based recovery is suitable for their specific project before moving toward industrial implementation.

Resin-based gold recovery is best understood as a strategic technology option for selected low-grade, remote, oxidized, tailings, or modular gold projects. It can help reduce development barriers where conventional fixed infrastructure may be too large, costly, or inflexible for the project stage.

With gold-selective resin technology and the SepGold™ mobile modular system, Sunresin helps mining customers convert suitable low-concentration leach solutions into recoverable gold value. By combining selective materials, process engineering, modular equipment, and project support, Sunresin provides a practical gold recovery solution for mining projects that require flexibility, scalability, and efficient resource utilization.
